Travel: Maastricht, Netherlands

Maastricht is a lovely town in Netherlands situated close to the borders of Germany and Belgium. Which makes it a great place to visit if you want to tick off three countries visited within a day. In itself, Maastricht is a great place for a day trip, where you can enjoy the ancient European town atmosphere without the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan city.

We visited the Bisschopsmolen, a traditional bakery, which uses a water mill to grind and produce their bread and pastries. They are particularly well known for their Limburg vlaai, a traditional pie consisting of a fruit filling and also their spelt French bread.

Soup of the day, tomato soup with spelt bread and butter. (€5.95)

If you're in the area don't miss out on the market which is held in the Market Square where the town hall is also situated.

We had some Kibbeling (deep fried fish in batter and garlic sauce). The fish was really fresh and tasty. Good value for fish lovers!

Pickled herring with onions.

Maastricht is definitely worth the visit and we would highly recommend a day trip if you're in the area and would like to enjoy a bit of the Dutch flair and at the same time have a bit of peace and quiet.

  3. I'd love to explore more of the Netherlands! I only had a very short time in Amsterdam a few years ago but loved every minute. I really wanted to try the herring but all the herring stores were closed! :(
