2015 KL Mooncakes: A Recap + Best Of

Mid-Autumn Festival falls on this Sunday, 27th September 2015. Have you stocked up on your mooncakes for the celebrations? We will usually get a few flavours and then share it among the family with some tea while the kids play with their lanterns and candles.

Here is a recap on some of the best mooncakes I have tried in KL / Selangor this year. Click on the hotel names for a detailed review.

What's good: Any mooncake featuring their salted egg yolk is good, as the chef cures their own salted egg yolk. We also enjoyed their new bamboo charcoal skin with assorted nuts. For fans of snowskin mooncakes, do check out their mini pandan coconut floss paste with single salted egg yolk and mini "red prawn" durian mooncake.

Price: RM20 nett onwards for snow skin, RM28 onwards for baked mooncakes.

Where to get: At the hotel lobby, Tao Chinese Restaurant or at MidValley Mooncake Fair.

What's good: We loved the banana chocolate snow skin flavour. This is another place to get your mooncakes with salted egg yolk, as they are also cured in-house by the chefs. From the baked variety, we would recommend the creamy milk tea and pandan lotus paste with single yolk.

Price: RM25 onwards for snow snow skin, RM26 onwards for baked mooncakes.

Where to get: At Ti Chen, or at the Mooncake Bazaar, Tokyo Street, Pavilion KL

What's good: The hotel offers a whopping 17 different flavours this year, from classic baked flavours to snow skin and chocolate mooncakes. They are even 2 limited edition VIP mooncakes- one which is coated in 24 carat edible gold. Our personal favorites are the mini snow skin with blue pea flower in pumpkin paste and seeds, mini snow skin with custard paste and sesame seeds, and mini snow skin with durian paste.

Price: RM20 to RM48.

Where to get: At Lai Po Heen, or at the Mooncake Bazaar, Tokyo Street, Pavilion KL

What's good: The white lotus paste filling is very smooth and good. We also like the Shanghai pandan lotus paste; the pastry was crumbly and the pandan lotus seed paste filling was slightly less dense and had a light, almost melt-in-the-mouth texture to it.

Price: RM19 onwards for snow skin, RM26 onwards for baked mooncakes.

Where to get: At the hotel lobby, Shang Palace or at MidValley Mooncake Fair.

What's good: They only offer baked mooncakes here, two of our favorite flavours here are the 5 Sen5es Assorted Nuts Mixture and Shanghainese Moon Cake Lotus Paste with Single Yolk.

Price: RM25 nett each.

Where to get: At the hotel or Mooncake Bazaar, Tokyo Street, Pavilion KL.

What's good: We like the pandan paste baked mooncake as well as the snow skin with dragonfruit paste, as the filling is very smooth and slightly tangy.

Price: RM17 onwards for snow skin, RM23 onwards for baked mooncakes.

Where to get: At the hotel.
