Tsuru-koshi Udon, Takashimaya Food Hall, Singapore

Good Morning from Singapore! Day 2 in Singapore (May 2012)... we woke up to a beautiful view.. nice?

A view of Marina Bay Sands from our hotel room in Swissotel, Singapore

During our last visit, we had English breakfast at Wild Honey, however this time we decided to have a Japanese breakfast. Since we wanted to go shopping at Orchard Road, we hunted for some Japanese food there. Most ramen shops open at 11am on a Sunday (10am and I was hungry!), so we went to Takashimaya Food Hall in the basement 2 level since I remember seeing lots of Japanese eateries the last time we were here.

Walking to Takashimaya.. sunny day!

The first shop that caught my eye was Tsuru-Koshi Udon :) The menu includes illustration of the udon, prices start from S$6.50 for a kake udon up to S$10 for an ebi tempura udon. Click here for the full menu.

Since we wanted to try other things around here, we shared a bowl of Atutu Tan Tan Udon (S$9), served with Chinese hot sauce. Basically, the "hot sauce" is mapo tofu style pork mince... slightly spicy.

In KL, our favorite udon spot is Sanuki Udon in Taman Desa. How did Tsuru-koshi Udon fare against Sanuki? Fortunately, very very well. We enjoyed our Atutu tan tan udon very much - the noodles had a nice bite and smooth. The poached egg was nicely done, and mixed together with the pork mince and scallions, it was flavourful and delicious. A big thumbs up from us.

Happy to see noodles :)

Lovely sauce.. so flavourful.

Stay tuned for more breakfast blogs from us - we went to another 4 other places after this udon!

Verdict: Delicious udon at an affordable price (don't convert to RM la).

Full set of photos, including menu can be viewed here.

Opening times: 10am to 9.30pm daily. Last order at 9pm.

Service: Despite being in a food hall, you place your order at the counter and they bring the noodles to you when ready. Good.

  4. great-looking view! i guess that beats the view from any hotel room in KL (even those that face the twin towers, which i guess we're kind of jaded with by now) :D
oooh, it's been ages since i had udon, since the ramen craze has been raging for all these months now. it'd be nice to have a simple udon sometime, i guess, a change from all the pork bone broth and seasoned eggs we've been eating =)

    1. I guess Singaporeans would say that too, but as tourists, it's great to have a room facing the majestic Marina Bay Sands, (or for tourists in Malaysia the twin towers) ;P

Udon is less heavy, I could easily two bowls on my own whereas I always struggle to finish 1 bowl of ramen on my own.
