Awesome dessert: Tiramisu

We start the new year with a post of something I love eating.

Tiramisu is my favorite dessert of all time, so that was what I made for Christmas day to share with my loved ones. This is a recipe which I have stuck to since uni days, one which has never disappointed me. I like mine with Baileys Irish Cream but you can use other flavourful liquor such as Marsala or dark rum. If you're serving this to children, you can always omit the Baileys.

I usually make this in a large dish but it doesn't present very well, so this time, I made them in individual glasses for a more aesthethically pleasing result. Tiramisu is best eaten very cold so I made it the night before and keep them chilled in the refridgerator. So, on Christmas day, all I had to do was to top the tiramisu with a dusting of cocoa powder, chocolate shavings and strawberries. Easy peasy!

A combination of cream, mascarpone cheese, alcohol and chocolate sure makes one hell of a sexy dessert!

Tiramisu
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Makes 6

Ingredients
250g mascarpone cheese
25g icing sugar
175ml strong coffee, cooled to room temperature
250ml double or whipping cream
60ml Baileys
12 sponge fingers (Savoiardi biscuits)
1 tsp vanilla extract / essence
Cocoa powder, for dusting
Chilled chocolate bar
6 strawberries, for garnish

1. Place mascarpone cheese and icing sugar in a large bowl and beat with an electric hand whisk for 1 minute until the mascarpone has softened.

2. Whip cream until it forms soft peaks. Add 15ml of Baileys and fold into the mascarpone mixture.

3. Place coffee and remaining Baileys in a shallow dish. Break 1 finger into half, then dip into coffee mixture and place in the glass.

4. Spoon 2 tbsp of mascarpone mixture into glass and place another layer of fingers dipped in coffee mixture. Top with a final layer of mascarpone cheese and cover the glasses with cling film. Repeat for 5 other glasses. Chill in the fridge for at least 6 hours.

5. Before serving, dust with some cocoa powder and grated chocolate flakes. Top with a strawberry. Bon appétit!

Tiramisu literally "pull me up" definitely lightened our moods :)

  4. A very sexy dessert indeed. It's my lil Devil's fave Italian dessert but we are just too lazy to make it at home. Maybe now we'd be inspired by your post to try it ourselves.

A 2011 resolution, maybe? Happy New Year to you and your loved ones! :)

  8. I heart tiramisu too. It may be the most hyped about Italian dessert, but if done right, who cares what the critics say eh? And it's the best way to ring in the new year too.

Wishing you a good 2011 ahead!

  12. Pure Heart: You can get all the ingredients from Tesco, except for the sponge fingers. Sponge fingers available in most KL supermarkets.

  13. Happy to know that and now I remember, sponge fingers can get at Pizza Italian at Oakland. Aunty Teng has interest to make it together too. She ask me to look at your home made 'siow yuk'. MC said is very very delicious, keep on asking Aunty Teng to make 'siow yuk'......
