Steamboat @ Jade Village Restaurant, Taman Connaught, Cheras

Since we had a fairly good dim sum experience at Jade Village Restaurant, we returned on another evening to try out their steamboat offering. Steamboat, also known as hot pot, consist of a simmering pot of stock placed in the middle of the table, whereby ingredients are placed into the pot and cooked at the table.

While driving along Jalan Cerdik, Taman Connaught, have you ever noticed this house with an aeroplane perched above its front entrance? Definitely not a house ornament you would see very often.

Al fresco dining

We braved the heat and ordered a pot of chinese tea, however the heat proved too much for us as we dug into our food. Luckily they do serve refreshing cold drinks such as sea coconut and longan.

As we waited for our table to be set up, complimentary fried wantans were served with a mayo dip. The wantans were really nice as they were hot off the deep fryer.

The steamboat here is offered in a sectioned pot whereby a different type of soup is placed in each section - a clear chicken soup and spicy tom yum soup. We preferred the tom yum soup so we cooked most of our food in this section.

We ordered a steamboat portion for 2 persons, which was more than sufficient to feed 3 adults and a child. An assortment of fish balls, pork balls, squid, fish cakes, tofu, vegetable, yee mee noodles, eggs, meehoon, prawn dumplings, fresh prawns, crabsticks, fried beancurd (foo chuk) and leafy vegetables were provided for us to cook.

A chilli/lime dipping sauce was provided and some garlic oil to be poured into the clear broth to enhance the taste of the soup.

I liked the pork balls here, they were very tasty. Some of the fishballs had pork fillings.

You can also order from the a la carte menu if you like more variety. Choose from scallops, deep fried chicken wings, beef slices, pork slices, crab, organic mushrooms, fried wantans, fishballs and porkballs.

Verdict: The steamboat fare was decent, but what made the steamboat experience truly enjoyable and memorable was the great company.

Opening times: Steamboat available from 6.00pm to 10.30pm daily. Dim sum is also available here from 7.00am to 3.00pm.

Price: RM13.80 per person. Chinese tea RM2.40, sea coconut drink RM2.00.
