Seremban Hakka Mee

One of my favorite food from Seremban is Hakka mee. Hakka mee is a Chinese noodle dish whereby flat yellow noodles is topped with minced pork, spring onions and a clear pork gravy. In Seremban, there are two places where you can get the authentic Hakka mee; one is opposite the Yellow Bus Stand behind Maybank and the other in Pasar Besar Seremban (wet market). Hakka mee may look like a very simple dish, but it tastes absolutely delicious! The flat noodles here are homemade and have a lovely springy texture to it.

Simply irresistable noodles..

Just the other day, I was chatting to The Unc on MSN when he declared that he was cooking Hakka mee for lunch. Before long, I was craving for some. So, we (mum and I) decided to recreate this dish at home. We used the Cintan non-fried broad noodles which have a similar texture and outlook to the one from the Seremban outlets. I have to say, the minced pork tasted awesome. It was bursting with flavour and so fragrant! For variation, you can also add some finely diced shitake mushrooms for extra texture.

Mum's version of Hakka mee

The real McCoy, Tow Kee Hakka Mee (tapau from Pasar Besar Seremban stall)

Hakka mee
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 10 - 15 minutes
Serves 3

Ingredients
220g non-fried broad noodles
400g pork mince
2 stalks spring onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
2-3 tbsp soy sauce, to taste
3 tbsp vegetable oil
Shitake mushrooms (optional)

1. Heat the oil in a frying pan on a medium heat. Add the garlic and fry for 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Add the pork mince and allow to simmer for 5 minutes, or until thoroughly cooked. Season with soy sauce and remove from heat.

2. In a separate pot, bring water to boil. Add the noodles, and cook for 3-4 minutes, until noodles are "firm to the bite". Drain well and divide the noodles between 3 bowls.

3. Top the noodles with minced pork and drizzle with some of the oil which have been released during cooking. Garnish with some spring onions.

4. Hakka mee is best eaten with pickled green chillies or jalapenos. Both were unavailable, so we served ours with some red chillies instead.

Top the noodles with as much minced pork and spring onions as you like

Give it a good mix and dig in!
