The Shore Oceanarium, Melaka

Before our recent trip to Melaka, I was searching for places to visit with the kids and The Shore Oceanarium popped up. Located on Level 2 of The Shore Shopping Gallery, this attraction is definitely a must-visit; not only did we have a fun time exploring the oceanarium, we learnt lots of new things about marine life too.

We were really impressed with the facility and layout of the place, with exhibits clearly labelled and well-spaced out. Our first stop was the Interactive Touch Pool, where the kids got to touch various sea animals such as starfish, sea cucumber, sea urchin, horseshoe crab and bamboo shark. The staff here are helpful and guided the kids on the correct way of handling the marine life.

One of the cool features we encountered here was the Magical Vacuum Aquarium; under normal circumstances and the law of physics, water would flow out through any hole in the middle of a water filled tank. The MVA Aquarium however, defies gravity with its specially designed mechanism that creates a vacuum at the top of the aquarium and maintains low pressure such that water doesn't come gushing out of the outlet. You can put your hand right in and touch the fish.

Visitors can also watch an educational documentary about sea turtle "A Turtle's Adventure" in the 8-in-1 effect 3D Cinema Plus Theater.

The River Story exhibit comes with a cylindrical aquarium housing a tree and many species of fish native in the different river region: Indian River, Chinese Mountain Stream, Australian River, Lake Malawi, Malaysia and more. Here, you can also find the sturgeon, the world's largest freshwater fish which is also the fish you get your caviar from.
