Recipe: Fried Wantan 炸云吞

We always order fried wantans (wontons 炸云吞) whenever we eat out in a noodle restaurant. I'm usually not a fan of deep frying, but decided to try making these at home for the family. I got myself one of those deep frying splatter screens and happy to report that it's amazing as it keeps the oil from splattering all over my kitchen (and me!).

I used a mix of minced pork, diced prawns and garlic chives for the filling, marinated and wrapped them in wantan skins and then deep fried until golden and crispy. Definitely much more cost-effective to have these at home versus in the restaurant. Best of all, both the kids loved them, so I'll definitely be making this again.

Crispy, crunchy, delicious!

Fried wantan
Recipe by Baby Sumo
Preparation time: 20-30 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes
Makes 25

Ingredients
150g pork mince
3 prawns, peeled and diced
2 garlic chives, finely chopped
2 tsp light soy sauce
1/2 tsp sesame oil
A pinch of white pepper
1/2 tsp ginger wine
25 wantan skins
Enough oil for deep frying

To serve
Thai sweet chilli sauce

1. In a bowl, place the pork mince, prawns, chives, soy sauce, white pepper, and ginger wine. Mix well and marinate for 10-15 minutes.

2. To wrap wantans: Prepare a small bowl of water. Take 1 piece of wantan skin, and place a small mound (roughly 1 tsp) of filling in the centre. Dip your finger into the water, and run it around the edges of the wantan wrapper. Bring the opposite edges together to form a triangle. Gather the top of the wantan skins and seal with more water to form a wantan parcel. (see image here)

3. In a wok or saucepan, heat enough oil for deep frying over high heat. Once the oil is hot, drop the wantan into the pan to deep fry. Cook until the wantan skin is crispy and golden. Remove and drain on a paper towel to remove excess oil. You may cook these in 2-3 batches, depending on the size of your wok/pan.

4. Serve hot with sweet chilli sauce.

  1. I don't know of any place here where I can get these fried ones. I wonder why nobody bothers to make and sell them.

    1. They are pretty common over here, though the restaurants charge almost RM1 per wantan which honestly is too much for that small thing.
