Sate Kajang Hj Samuri, Kajang (near MRT)

Hubby is a huge fan of satay and for the longest time, we've been speaking about going to Kajang for satay but it didn't quite transpire. Last weekend, we finally made plans with our friend PT to take the MRT to Kajang for a satay trail.



Our first stop was at Sate Kajang Hj Samuri, inarguably the most famous satay restaurant in Kajang which has been around since 1972. If you're coming by MRT, you will see the restaurant as soon as get off the Stadium Kajang station. Exit through Pintu C and cross the road to the restaurant. For those driving, there are parking spaces within the restaurant compound as well as outside. There is also a children's playground directly outside the restaurant.



Once you have arrived at the restaurant, look for a table and take a note of the table number. If you're here in a group, send one of your group members to wait in line while you look for a table. When ordering, you will need to let them know your table number as the satay will delivered to your table once its ready.

For our first round, we ordered 10 sticks of sate ayam (RM0.98 each), 3 sate daging (RM0.98 each), 3 sate kambing (RM1.60 each), 1 hati (RM0.90 each) and 1 perut (RM0.98 each). It was around 3.15pm; queue was pretty long but we only had to wait about 10 minutes for our order. We were well impressed with the taste of the satay as they were well-marinated. I am usually adverse to chicken satay with fat, however the satay here converted me as it was interspersed with just enough fat to keep it moist and juicy.




The beef satay is possibly the best we've ever had; in the past we have been put off from ordering beef satay as they can be quite tough but Hj Samuri's version was absolutely tender and flavorful. We ordered satay kambing (mutton) for comparison sake, however we just thought this was okay compared to the beef and chicken so we would stick to the other two in future.




PT had the sate hati (chicken liver & gizzard) and perut (beef tripe) which she said was good so do give this a try if you're into more exotic parts. They also offer fish, rabbit and venison satay as well as fried rice, chicken rice and noodles.




Worth a special mention is the peanut sauce which was thick and fragrant. In Kajang, the peanut sauce comes with a side of sambal chilli, which you mix together into the sauce. Personally I prefer the sauce on its own as I find it tasty just like that. Don't forget to order some nasi impit (RM1.80 each) or ketupat to go with your meal. If you request for additional cucumber, this is chargeable at RM0.60.





So, as I mentioned at the start, our intention was to go on a satay trail here at Kajang. We chose two other restaurants after researching on the internet. Our second stop was at Nyok Lan in Restoran Malaysia, which we had to brave through lots of crazy traffic by foot to get to. To our disappointment, we were greeted by a closed shop along with "For Sale/ To Let" signs hanging from the awning. We asked a nearby shop and was told that they have ceased business since two months ago since the owners have decided to retire. Tough luck! So we had to get through all the crazy traffic to get to Satay Shop #3 on our list.




Satay Shop #3 on our list was Sate Emas Kajang. Google Maps almost drove us crazy that day as it kept taking us to the wrong places but we eventually found it. And guess what? This was actually at the opposite side of the MRT station and we were super surprised to find that this business has also closed down and moved to another location. Whattttttt??? A reputable newspaper recently published an article about all three satay stalls so imagine our surprise to find out that 2 out of 3 are no longer operating in the span of two months.




So, that is the story of our failed satay trail and how we ended up back at Hj Samuri for satay as Hubby was still hungry. Not that we're complaining as we do like the satay here but we were hoping to try different shops and compare them.

For the second round, we had 6 sate ayam, 3 sate daging and 1 sate perut. We placed our order about 5pm and although there was hardly any queue, we had to wait about 20 minutes for our food to arrive as the restaurant was getting busier by now.We would certainly return here when the satay craving kicks in, now that it's so convenient to get to via MRT.

  1. I came here for satay too, when I took my MRT ride from Kajang to KL.
    It was crowded during weekend. I didn't bother to dine there as it was getting late evening already. So I dapao home. The satay was meaty and moist!

  2. Yeah, I read about Nyok Lan's closing from PlacesandFood about two weeks back. It's so sad that the younger generation doesn't want to take over a tried and tested roaring business. I really like this Chinese satay very much especially their pineapple infused satay sauce! T_T

  3. If I am not wrong, they have outlets everywhere now, no need to go all the way to Kajang? I had beef satay for lunch today, tasted really good...looked like the same size...but RM2.00 a stick!!! This one's so much cheaper!!!

  4. Nyok Lan Satay has younger generation continuing the business but in a different location and a new set up. It's called Satay Putera Kajang. It is located next to the Stadium Kajang MRT station, just a different exit.
