CNY 2017: Dynasty Restaurant, Renaissance Kuala Lumpur

To celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year, Executive Sous Chef Kok Chee Kin and his team at Dynasty Restaurant. Renaissance Kuala Lumpur have specially created Festive Menus that will showcase the finest flavours of Cantonese cuisine from 11 January to 11 February 2017.

The Festive Menu will feature Dim sum selections, treasure pots or poon choi, luxurious Set Menus, Claypot waxed meat rice, and a variety of yee sang. There will be three Festive Set Menus, namely Happiness (RM1,688 nett), Fortune (RM2,088 nett) and Longevity (RM3,288 nett) for tables of 10 persons. Chef Kok has also created a 6-course and a 7-course set menu for 2 person and are priced at RM288 and RM498 nett respectively, as well as a 9-course set menu for 6 persons at RM1,088 nett.

Start your meal with the prosperity toss, aka 'lo hei', a must-have for good fortune and great wealth for the new year. Dynasty Restaurant offers six types of yee sang- Salmon, Fruity fiesta, Jellyfish, Lobster & salmon, 5 treasures and Mini abalone & salmon, priced from RM108 nett to RM338 nett . For our review, we had the Salmon Yee Sang, which is part of the 9-course Fortune Set that we were having.

Next to arrive was the Fortune Combination Platter, which comes with four types of hot appetizers -deep fried roll with crabstick and salted egg, money bags, gold ingot with dried oyster and stir fried scallops with asparagus and XO sauce. My favorites were the deep fried roll and scallops.

Chef Kok is an advocate for healthy eating, hence his festive menu focuses on the use of traditional ingredients while emphasizing on light and fresh flavours. The Ying Yang scallop soup with dried seafood was light and comforting. Add a dash of vinegar to enhance the flavours of the soup. The soup was chocked full of ingredients such as scallop, prawn, crab meat, sea cucumber and mushrooms.

Right after the soup, we were served a surprise dish (not from the Fortune Set Menu) - the Dynasty's Treasure Pot of Prosperity (RM428 nett for 5 persons) aka poon choi, featuring whole sun-dried scallops, fish maw, stuffed dried oyster, fresh scallop, flower mushroom, fu kwei abalone, farm chicken, roasted duck, money bag, sea cucumber, roasted pork, tiger prawns, fish stomach and coral clam. What a treat, with all these luxurious ingredients.

Fish symbolises abundance for the new year. By steaming the fish with superior soy sauce, we could enjoy the natural sweetness and freshness of the fish. Simple and good! My favorite dish of the evening.

Steamed live tiger-dragon grouper with scallion and ginger.

Another highlight of the meal was the Braised pork knuckle with mushroom and sea cucumber. The pork knuckle has been braised for several hours until fork tender, and the skin is lovely and gelatinous. The sea cucumber, which signifies happiness was also cooked to a beautiful, toothsome texture and iceberg lettuce, which signifies soaks up the deliciously rich sauce.

The smell of the Golden prawns with spicy minced garlic dish was wonderfully fragrant and enticing. Definitely worth getting your fingers dirty for.

If you love your lap mei fan, you should definitely try the Wok fried glutinous rice with assorted wax meat. Nice and flavorful.

To end, we had the Double boiled dried bamboo cane with aloe vera, fungus and tong yuen along with four types of Dynasty's fortune pastries (mandarin and oranges snow skin with mung bean filling, nian gao with grated coconut and ingot pastries with lotus paste).
