Moonfish Cafe, Aberdeen, Scotland

One of the best meals we had during our #BabySumoinEurope trip this time was at Moonfish Cafe in Aberdeen. Not only were the dishes visually appealing, they were delicious and expertly executed too :)

For lunch, you can choose to have a 2-course lunch for £14. You can also order them as a la carte dishes if you prefer to have a light lunch (ie one course only). We decided to go for three 2-course lunches in total (ordering two starters, three mains and one dessert). You can view the current menu here. The restaurant is usually very busy during lunch hour, so it is best to make a reservation.

For starters, we had the mussels (£5.95) with sage, cider and mustard. I was impressed with the generous portion, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fresh, simple and good. I shared this with Baby D, who loves mussels as much as I do.

Hubby had the chicken liver with prune and almond (£5.95), which was lovely and smooth, complemented well with the sweet prune It also came with a piece of crispy chicken skin as well as two pieces of toasted bread. A nice starter, it would have been better if it came with more bread which we could have with the chicken liver.

For mains, we had the Hake (£9.95), Duck (£9.95) and Risotto (£9.95). They looked fantastic, beautifully plated so the first impressions were good. We ordered the pea and rocket risotto for the kids, as they're fond of risottos - it was nicely done, creamy and cooked to al dente and topped with smoked haddock. I had the duck - the meat was beautifully pink and tender with a crispy skin. This was served with savoy, apple and celeriac puree. There was also a lovely pastry with shredded duck on the side.

The highlight of the meal was the Hake, with chickpea, black pudding and sherry. The fish was beautifully cooked, flaky flesh with crisp skin, and I like the crispy bits topped on the fish too. Delicious combination!

Finally, for desserts, we chose the Chocolate Mousse (£5.95) with milk, honey and raspberry. A great end to an excellent meal. Before we left, we asked and were told that they only change their menu every 3-4 months. We would definitely be back the next time we're visiting Scotland.

Verdict: You get a taste of fine dining (food made exceptionally well with good quality ingredients), without having to pay exorbitant prices. Good, friendly service too.

P.S Oh, and btw they have a sister restaurant in KL too - Sitka Restaurant.
