Hakka Marble Restaurant, Cheras, KL

A great noodle place which we frequent in Cheras is Hakka Marble Restaurant located in Taman Bukit Anggerik. This restaurant is extremely popular, so if you're visiting during peak hours (7pm onwards) you may find that there will be quite a wait for your order. I would recommend ordering a 1-person portion of several different types of noodles to share for more variety and eating enjoyment. ;)

As the name suggests, their signature dish here is the Hakka marble, also known as abacus noodles (suan pan ji). Its name is derived from the shape of the noodles which closely resembles the beads from a Chinese abacus. Hubby calls it the "Chinese gnocchi". Over here, you get a choice of Hakka marble made from either yam or pumpkin - we went for the yam version (RM14.50) which is stir fried with minced pork, Chinese mushrooms, black wood fungus (mok yee), chopped coriander and spring onions. It has a great texture, and tasted really flavorful with the minced pork sauce.

They do a pretty mean Hokkien mee here (RM7.50 for 1 pax) - thick yellow noodles coated in a dark, caramel sauce with plenty of wok hei. We love it! You can eat it with the accompanying chilli paste for extra oomph.

On weekends, there is a minimum order for 2 pax for Hokkien mee here.

Another favorite of ours here is the loh mee (RM7.50 for 1 pax). A bottle of vinegar is available at every table, so you can add in as much vinegar to your liking. Super appetizing and comforting!

For those who prefer rice, they do a good version of fried rice (RM7.50) here too, with prawns, lap cheong, egg and spring onions - delicious with plenty of wok hei.

Another popular dish here is the fried assam laksa (RM8 per plate). The noodles (loh shu fan type) is fried in chilli paste and lime and then topped with sliced raw cucumber, onions and pineapple as well as a blanched king prawn.  It was aesthetically pleasing, however I feel that it is not salty enough - nothing a little soy sauce can't fix though. This is something quite special and interesting, definitely worth trying.

Spicy and tangy!

Other than the above, they also do Cantonese style noodles and fried pak ko here. See menu below.

  1. Never tried those marbles. I guess Sibu is a Foochow town, so none of this Hakka delicacy around. Sure hope to try one day.
