CNY 2013: Toh Yuen, Hilton Petaling Jaya

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays; signifying the beginning of Spring. This is the time where Chinese all around the world return home on the eve of CNY to have a reunion dinner with their family. And during this festive occasion Toh Yuen Chinese Restaurant of Hilton Petaling Jaya will be featuring a wide variety of ‘Yee Sang’, prosperous set menus and festive a la carte Chinese delicacies from 21 January to 24 February 2013.

We have always enjoyed the excellent Chinese fare served at Toh Yuen, so we were happy to accept the invitation to sample some of their CNY delicacies.

At Toh Yuen , diners can choose from four tailored set menus - Fortune Menu (RM988++), Happiness Menu (RM1188++), Longevity Menu (RM1388++) and Prosperity Menu (RM1688++) for a table of 10 pax. We sampled the Prosperity Menu that evening.

We started off with the colorful Deluxe Salmon & Seaweed Yee Sang with Mixed Fruits. This was very appetizing, as a variety of fresh fruits such as mango, pineapple and dragon fruit is used. In yee sang, you will also find crackers (represents happiness), peanuts and sesame (symbolise harvest), oil (represents wealth) and pomelo (good luck). The fresh seafood sashimi symbolises life and longevity. Chinese believes the higher the “Yee Sang” is tossed, the more prosperous one will get in the coming years.

The soups from Toh Yuen are always good, and this Braised Baby Abalone with Dried Seafood Soup is no exception. Clear yet packed full of flavour.

Next is the duo of roasted chicken with smoked duck with dragon fruit sauce and vegetable cracker. The smoked duck which we have had before is as good as we remembered it. Very flavourful and the sauce which is slightly tangy goes well with it.

And yes, cod fish is another dish very well done at Toh Yuen. This time, the Canadian cod fish is deep fried and served with a honey sauce. The fish is moist and extremely flaky, a big thumbs up from me!

The good food keeps coming.... the braised sea cucumber with mixed mushrooms and sun dried scallop is well prepared. The sea cucumber is braised to my preferred liking, with a slight bite and a very flavorful sauce.

The sauteed fresh sea prawn with wasabi mayo and Sakura denbu was lovely too. The prawns were plump and juicy, complimented by the wasabi mayo sauce. Just nice :)

Finally, we enjoyed the steamed glutinous rice with sun dried oyster, salted egg yolk and chicken paste. This was served in individual parcels, the portion was just right after the preceding courses.

Dessert is a combination of the traditional nian gao which has been deep fried with slices of yam, and a modern Hilton ice cream cake. A sweet ending for certain.

  3. Wah, so many good dishes again. Eh, Yen, how to lose weights like this, hehe! This yeas will be the 8th year that I'm spending my CNY in Sydney & I know that it will take me a long time to go back to Malaysia to celebrate this special festival because it crashes with the school days here.

    1. It's nice that many hotels use fresh ingredients in their yee sang, instead of those fried stuff with coloring.
