Gerai Makan Japanese BBQ @ Taman Desa, KL

Sparks fly..

It started raining at 5pm, and I thought "shucks, we won't be able to go for Japanese BBQ tonight".  Luckily for us, it stopped raining just before we were due to meet our friends CK, Kenny and Veron for a great evening of food and fun.

We made our way to Gerai Makan Japanese BBQ, located in a back alley at Plaza Faber in Taman Desa by some shophouses and flats. This makeshift restaurant is owned by the same people from Sanuki Udon. Nice cool evening breeze and big appetites in hand, we're ready to rock and roll, or rather grill and eat!

Our grill master for the evening, CK did a great job in cooking all the meats to perfection. We started off with the Genghis Khan (RM20), a Mongolian lamb stew which was flavorful and tender. It is recommended to start with this, since the meat has been partially cooked so you can fill your stomach first before you embark on your grilling session.

Unlike Sanuki Udon which is pork-free, this BBQ place serves pork, beef and lamb. There is a long list of pork parts that you can choose from. We tried the pork belly (RM10), liver (RM5) and baby intestine (RM10). Our favorite is definitely the pork belly, we must have had at least 6 plates between us that evening. And for the BBQ, the fatter it is, the better! The grilled layers of pork melt in the mouth. I was also very fond of the baby intestine, which was already boiled and marinated in a tangy-spicy sauce - I particularly liked its crunchy texture.

For beef, we tried the rib eye (RM10), tongue (RM10) and steak (RM25). Between the steak and rib eye, the former was nicer though it does come with a higher price tag.

Sizzle sizzle...

To meet our vegetable quota - edamame (RM3)

Japanese risotto (RM6) - stewed rice with egg - love the addition of the egg that makes this creamy

Baby intestine - crunch crunch

The ramen here is ok and it does the job of filling our stomachs. The broth is slightly peppery, which is quite comforting on a cool evening. For RM10, I felt the cha siu was pretty decent but noodles were more like pan mee-type noodles.

This was definitely a fun experience for me. Thanks to CK and Kenny for the treat.

    1. We were lucky, it just rained earlier so it was a very cooling night, perfect for BBQ! I dont think I would have enjoyed it as much if it was a hot, sweaty night.

  8. ...and the surroundings... Eyewwww!!!! The town council will ask places here to close down if they do not bother to spruce up - have to tile the floor, paint the place, have a decently nice toilet...make it more presentable and clean.

    1. It's the whole experience, sitting there with your friends, enjoying their company, while grilling the meat that makes it good.

  12. a carnivore's delight! but hey, edamame beans do NOT fulfill enough of a vegetable quota for a meaty meal like this! :D

    1. If Veron didn't order the edamame we would have skipped vegetables altogether! ;P

  14. I love this place! Don't get to go often but it's a real favourite of mine. Where else to find cheap meat to barbecue? :D I usually go for lots of steak, a genghis kahn and a pork shoulder..because the waiter said that one has less fat compared to belly! haha

    1. Oi... next time don't listen to the waiter.. order the pork belly! It's an order from me! The fatter the better... cos it just melts in the mouth la. You MUST try it.

  15. It is places like this that make Malaysia so wondrous...located by some flats in the street...I can almost imagine how the Health and Safety people in the UK would have palpitations just thinking about it. Love living in a place where tasty food takes priority :)

    1. Hahaha yeah, at first I thought it would be dodgy walking down an alley, but the alley wasn't a dark dingy one like I imagined. ;P

This place is definitely better than a lot of street hawker styles located next to a drain.

  19. It was raining and the waiter all looks at us and didn't help us at all to move the table. End up my friends and I move the table by ourself. And the food they serve to us is very small portion BUT for those Japanese peoples is with big portion. We only take 4 plate of beef and 3 tiger beers, try to guess how much is it. IT's RM 91.00..............what the fuck~!!!

  20. NEVER EVER will go back to there again~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And peoples please don't go there and don't introduce your friends or relative to there, it's REALLY REALLY not WORTH IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Really bad experience eating there. 30 minutes to wait for the waitress to take order, another 1 hr for raw food to be served. By the time, we can start bbq, everyone has already fed up. We are the one doing cooking!! Mind u, how can they make us wait so long?!
