Italian food @ Prego, The Westin Kuala Lumpur

Lazy Saturdays with good food...

.. are my favourite kind of days.  Woke up to a beautiful sunrise and said to Hubby, "Come, let's go to Prego and spend our Starwood vouchers." After almost a year with the Starwood Privilege card, we still have tons of vouchers left - better spend them before they expire!

Sunrise in KL

Though it's our first time at Prego at The Westin KL, we have heard many good things about it. Furthermore it has been voted as the "Best Italian Restaurant" in KL by Time Out KL for a few years (you can see the awards hanging on the walls). It was a good thing we turned up slightly earlier as the place started filling up real quick. Service is pleasant. Prego has an open kitchen, so you can watch the kitchen staff at work - they have a wood-fire oven for the pizzas too. If I had a minor complaint to make, it would be that the tables are too small for big eaters like us... it's hard to fit more than 2 plates on the table at the same time.

We can see the open kitchen clearly from where we were sitting

Award-winning

After placing our food orders, we were served this complimentary rustic-looking bread. If you think it looks like a hard piece of bread, you are SO WRONG. It was soft and fluffy inside, and the accompanying tomato salsa dip was very appetizing. I found myself eating A LOT of bread.

We ordered some of our favorite Italian dishes to share. I always believe that Italian cuisine is one of those that are meant for sharing... it's better to have half a risotto and half a pizza... variety is the spice of life, yes? Except scallops maybe... I think I could eat a whole plate of that easily! ;P

We started with the carpaccio di manzo, rucola, parmiggiano reggiano (RM44), thinly sliced beef fillet with rocket, marinated mushrooms, sundried tomato and Parmesan. Clean and light flavours. We also shared *gasp* the pan fried scallops served with cauliflower two ways and gremolata dressing (RM44). Compared to Favola, they only serve 3 scallops per portion  - so it's definitely not one for sharing (if you're a scallop lover like me LOL). Portions aside, it was pretty tasty though one of the scallops was slightly overcooked.

The risotto with wild mushroom and Parmesan (RM52) deserves top marks in terms of taste. Cooked to a perfect al dente, it was flavourful and not too wet. Very much to our liking.

The highlight of our meal was the pizza. We ordered the quattro formaggio (RM43), four cheese pizza using taleggio, mozzarella, gorgonzola and fontina with sage. It was pretty similar to some of the best ones we had in Venice, Italy during our travels - thin crust with deliciously pungent cheese.

Brings back good memories of Venice

We ended our meal with tiramisu (RM22), my all-time favorite Italian dessert. Prego's version is made with mascarpone, espresso AND brandy. It was very good, one of the nicest tiramisu we've had in KL.

Tiramisu Tradizionale

Verdict: Overall, the food here is very delicious - I can see why they have been voted so many times as the Best Italian in KL. I would also place them on my Top 3 List for Italian food. Portion size are slightly smaller though and presentation of food is on the rustic side. Prego does a Bubbly Brunch on Sunday.

    1. Yalo, we purposely come here during lunch time so that we can use the voucher. Well worth it!

  3. the risotto looks DEEEEELICIOUS, but eeks at the RM52 price! it seems kinda strange that it's more expensive than the slightly more reasonable-costing carpaccio and scallops :D

    1. Whenever I go to any Starwood outlets, I always feel that the price is reasonable since I get 50% off!

  4. I used to love this place. The last few days we went though we weren't so impressed with the food. The service has always been super. Perhaps they've changed systems again. We'll have to go back and give it another shot.
