Chinese Tapas for RM10++ @ Tai Zi Heen, Prince Hotel & Residence, Kuala Lumpur

*Updated: This Chinese Tapas promotion will be extended to 31st October 2011.

Ever visited a restaurant and wished you had more room in your stomach to sample more dishes from the menu? This September, Tai Zi Heen, the fine dining Chinese restaurant located in Prince Hotel & Residence KL brings to you the Chinese Tapas promotion, which features over 15 premium dishes priced at RM10++ per dish. The dishes featured are a mix of new and popular items from the a la carte menu in tapas portions.

Entrance to the restaurant

Tai Zi Heen has recently undergone some refurbishment and sports a new look. I was impressed from the moment I stepped through the doors. Both regal and sophisticated, the ambience and decor of the restaurant definitely added to the whole dining experience. The restaurant has a seating capacity of 180 persons with five private dining rooms. The largest private room was beautiful, with a view of the grand hotel lobby and the unique (and eye-catching) origami-inspired designer chandelier. I was told that this chandelier consists of 2000 pieces of Italian hand-cut crystals - wow!

Never seen anything like it before - beautiful origami chandelier!

Tableware
Tai Zi Heen is helmed by the award-winning Chinese Master Chef Ricky Thein, who along with his team creates contemporary dishes by taking original flavours and adding a modern twist to them. Ingredients are very fresh and dishes were all very well presented.

The portions for the Chinese tapas dishes here exceeded my expectations; I had expected them to be dainty but they were in fact quite sizeable and generous for the price charged. There is a total of 24 dishes to choose from, and we managed to try 12 of them.

One of my favorite dishes that afternoon was the Batter-fried whitebait fish with spiced salt. Not only was it flavoursome, it was crispy, crunchy, non-oily and simply addictive. I could easily finish a bowl of this on my own.

The batter-fried grouper fillets with mango salsa was well worth the price tag. The fish was flaky and moist, and was complimented really well by the slight tang from the mango salsa.

The Eight Treasure Sun Dried Seafood Soup was flavoursome, and very hearty. I love the fact that the chef does not skimp on the ingredients here, since the soup was laden with scallops and mushrooms.
Every spoonful was just as lovely

We really enjoyed the Smoked Duck in Egg Rolls and Preserved Ginger. The whole combination of smoked duck, preserved century egg and pickled ginger was just fantastic. Slightly sweet, savoury and salty, all in one.

Big juicy prawns snapped up in seconds, the Sauteed Prawns with Fried Garlic, Shallots and Dried Chillies was huge hit with us.

The prawns here are so meaty and succulent!
The sesame on the battered prawn added a nice texture and nutty flavour to this dish. Again, the prawns were huge and very meaty.

I love stir fried beef, especially those with very tender beef and the one here is no exception. Man, everything here is just so flavoursome.

At first sight, I thought this was pork ribs, but I quickly remembered that Tai Zi Heen was a pork-free restaurant. The mutton had been braised until it was soft and the meat was falling off the bones. The sauce has also been well absorbed into the meat making this simply delectable.

East meets West... steamed beef ball meets Mozzarella cheese. Innovative and definitely not weird.

The Wok Fried Squid with Black Beans would be a great dish to have with a big bowl of white rice. Lovely sauce.

Hubby enjoyed this Stir Fried Sliced Duck with Spicy Chilli Sauce, again the duck meat was very flavoursome and tender.

Both spicy and sour, the Thai-style shark's fin soup got our tastebuds tingling.

A delicious spread
We enjoyed our food with a pot of Hai Shang Hong Flower Tea (RM10); this is basically green tea infused with certain type of flowers to enhance its taste and fragrance. Not only did it taste great, we were absolutely mesmerized by the flower inside the teapot.

So pretty

Desserts are not featured in this promotion, so we had some off the a la carte menu. Both the desserts we had were very good. Hubby had the Chilled Mango Puree with Vanilla Ice-cream , sago and pomelo (RM15++) which was wonderfully creamy and very refreshing. I had the Lemongrass Jelly with Aloe Vera and Lime Sorbet (RM12++); the lime sorbet was delightfully tangy and was perfect after the consumption of fried food earlier.

Full menu is available to view here. This promotion is valid on weekdays lunch only, from 1-30 September 2011.

Verdict: The great thing about this promotion is that we got to try so many dishes, which would not have been possible if we were ordering from the a la carte menu. Portions are ideal and reasonably priced. All dishes were very well prepared and service is immaculate.

Thank you to Travis Tan from Prince Hotel KL for the invite.
