Mini Snowskin Mooncakes @ Elegant Inn Hong Kong Cuisine, Taman Connaught, Cheras

I find it difficult to resist snow skin mooncakes... after dinner in Sim Hap Ke with the family, we walked past Elegant Inn (Taman Connaught branch) and spotted a banner outside the restaurant advertising the sale of both traditional baked and snow skin mooncakes. Under the Tender Crust baked mooncake category, you will find traditional flavours such as Red Bean (RM51.20), Pure Lotus (RM67.20), Pure Lotus with Two Yolks (RM75.20), White Lotus with Single Yolk (RM75.20) and Black Sesame with Single Yolk (RM75.20), all sold per box of 4 pcs.

However, I was more interested in their snow skin varieties. There are only 3 flavours available; red bean, pandan lotus and golden raisins. We bought the assorted selection which offers 2 pieces of each flavour, priced at RM36 per box of 6 pcs. That works out at about RM6 per piece, which is pretty good value for money.

Red bean, golden raisins and pandan lotus snow skin mooncakes

Simple packaging

These mini snow skin mooncakes were cute, measuring 5cm in diameter (slightly larger than the ones we got from Mandarin Oriental KL). All in lovely pastel colors; pink for red bean, white for golden raisins and green for pandan lotus.

These were quite easy to cut; I really dislike snow skin mooncakes which fall apart when you try to cut them, so these definitely passed the test. The filling was really smooth but a little on the sweet side. But this could be cured easily by having some green tea when eating the mooncakes. The green tea takes the edge off the sweetness of the mooncakes.

Smooth filling

Amongst the three flavours, we unanimously voted the pandan lotus as our favorite, followed by the golden raisins and red bean.

We definitely enjoyed these mooncakes since we finished 6 off in a single seating with no problems at all. :)

Green tea and mooncakes = great combo

  1. are mooncake prices really that expensive at rm75 per box? we bought a box of wing wah mooncakes (the hk ones) for 40odd aud and thought it was a blardy rip off, but the temptation of salted egg yolk and white lotus paste was overwhelming haha.

  2. golden raisins! i think that would be my choice! i generally like mooncakes that have a little bit more than just plain paste in them. but yeah, these three all look beautiful :D

  4. Joe: Mooncakes are priced approx. RM15 per piece in KL. I've spent way too much on them this year.

  5. Sean: Golden raisins one had a little more texture in the filling but was the sweetest of the lot.

  7. Snow skin mooncake is my favourite, no matter big or small, but if there were egg yolks, that would be nicer! :P

  8. ckiong: Then you should like the Flower Drum right - since it's a modern take on the traditional egg yolk/lotus mooncake.
