The Deli, MiCasa All Suite Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

When I read about The Deli from Boolicious's blog, the first thing that crossed my mind was what a real bargain the duck confit there was. So, the next time we were in KL city, The Deli it was for lunch.

Delicious duck leg confit salad

The Deli is the brainchild of Chef Takeshi Kimura and his team from Cilantro and serves salads, soup, gourmet sandwiches, fish and chips, pasta of the day, dessert and homemade ice-cream. Tucked away behind Cilantro, the decor is modest and casual, with quite limited seating. One of the best things about this place is that it is kids friendly, hence I am able to bring my kids along with me for lunch. They do however lack high chairs, which I hope they would provide when I return next time.

Some cakes and cheeses on display at the front

Place your order at the counter and the food will be brought to you.

Walk along this corridor and you will find The Deli tucked behind Cilantro

There is no menu to flick through here, but rather everything that they offer is written on a huge chalkboard. If you are unsure of what to order, have a look at the slideshow on the TV screen and perhaps one of the tantalising photos would catch your eye.

I knew what I wanted even before I arrived, so I wasted no time in ordering the duck leg confit salad (RM17). Incredibly tender and flavoursome, I was a happy woman as soon as I took my first bite. I was most surprised that my daughter (only 2 years old) kept asking me for more "duck confit please mummy" and told me at the end of the meal that she wanted to return for more "duck confit" the next time we're in town. It was so good that she even licked the bones clean. I guess next time we would have to order 2 portions of this - one for her and one for me. Ah before I forget, the salad was clean tasting and dressed with a tinge of balsamic vinegar. Definitely one of the tastiest and most reasonably priced duck confit in KL!

My mum chose to have the Fish and Chips (RM20) since my daughter likes eating fish. Everything is freshly prepared here, down to the tartare sauce. The dover sole was fresh, sweet and flaky and was coated in a light batter. The tartare sauce was very good, we just couldn't stop dipping our fish and chips in it. So good, we had to ask for a refill.

To end our meal, we had some caramel ice-cream (RM10 per scoop). It was luscious and deliciously creamy, although I do feel that it is slightly overpriced when compared to the other items on the menu.

Baby C clearly enjoying the ice-cream very much, we only managed to steal a few bites before she declared it as hers!

The Deli offers a take-away service, so we bought a grilled beef sandwich (RM20) back for The Unc. The wagyu beef was tender, succulent and perfectly cooked, served with caramelised onions, rocket leaves and grilled peppers. However, the ciabatta and chips must have gotten soggy during the transit home (the chips we had with the fish and chips were fine).

Wonderfully tender beef

Verdict: A great place for a casual lunch. Plus point is that I can bring my kids along for a good quality lunch.

  1. The fish fillet is a bit overcooked? The batter skin was a bit dark in colour wor, or just the lighting problem?

  2. Choi Yen: Yeah the batter is a little brown, but the fish definitely wasn't overcooked. It was a really good fish and chips dish.
