Kedai Makanan Woh Kei, Taman Connaught, Cheras

Since moving to KL, we have been trying new dai chow (Chinese stir fry) places around the area. The aim is to find a good one where we can have our regular dinners.

Oh, how I miss TC Keong Restaurant in Seremban which serves affordable and delicious Chinese food. Will there be any in Cheras which can replace you?

Yummy food from TC Keong

Kedai Makanan Woh Kei offers the usual dai chow fare as well as seafood such as crabs and fish. The place is always packed on weekends. As well as a downstairs dining area, they also have an air-conditioned section upstairs. There is an English printed menu, for those who can't read Chinese.

When we arrived at the restaurant, we noticed a huge promotional banner offering crabs at RM20 per kg. However, when we asked about it, the waitress told us that the crabs would be miniscule and she recommended that we went for the larger variety at RM45 per kg, more than double the price. Why advertise about it, and then try to put your customers off from ordering it? It makes you wonder how small the crabs would actually be and whether it was all just a scam to get you to order the bigger crabs.

Anyway, as we wanted to enjoy the crabs rather than having to struggle for scraps of meat, we went for the larger variety in kam hiong style (Crabs with Curry Leaves, Chilli and Dried Shrimp Paste).

The crabs were fresh and the dry paste was pretty flavoursome. However, we still prefer the one we get from Kwai Lam as the crabs are meatier.

The waitress recommended the Set Dinner, whereby one would get the soup of the day, fish, vegetable and pork dish. All for RM38, and would feed 3-4 people.

Soup of the day - Chinese watercress soup (sai yong choy tong)

Included with the set dinner was the Claypot Pork with Salted Fish and Dried Chillies (Ham Yu Fah Lam). This was really good, the thinly sliced pork belly was extremely flavoursome and went well with the rice.

The fish offered with the set dinner was garoupa (sek pan), and we could choose the style we wanted it cooked. As most of the styles offered were spicy, we chose to deep fry the garoupa so that Baby C would be able to eat it. When the fish arrived, the first thing that crossed our minds was how skinny the fish looked. There was hardly any flesh on it. Although the fish was fresh, the portion was extremely disappointing.

Next to arrive, was the Stir Fried Choy Tam. Nice and crunchy.

As the pork and fish dishes portion from the set dinner were small, we ordered another dish, Stir Fried Black Pepper Beef (RM12). Since we ordered this a la carte, we expected a bigger portion, however what arrived was as small as what we had from the set dinner. The taste was good, however again, the portion size is way too small.

Some watermelon for dessert

Verdict: The food here tastes good, however the portions are extremely small compared to what we're used to from dai chow places.

  1. next time if you are around sg Buloh, go and try out Restaurant Yin Her. The crabs are cheap. Around rm28/kg and fair size. Food there are cheap too but the customer service not that reliable.

1st round and 3rd round went, service wre good but 2nd round went there the service was real lousy.

  2. smallkucing: Thanks for the recommendation. Our favorite seafood restaurant, Kwai Lam also charges about RM30/kg for crabs. We only tried the crabs at Woh Kei as we were too lazy to drive all the way to Kg Subang for seafood.

  5. This looks like the typical "meat crab". I suspect the size of the cheaper crab would be between this and a flower crab...
