Shopee Reveals How Influencer Communities Build Trust

Shopee Reveals How Influencer Communities Build Trust
30% of Malaysian Buyers Reaffirm Purchase Decisions Through Relatable Influencers

Shopee, Malaysia’s leading e-commerce platform, studied the impact of Malaysian influencers on informing Malaysians’ purchase decisions online. Shopee’s marketplace study* examined the motivational structures of 2,459 buyers, consisting of Gen-Z (40%), Millennials (36%), Generation X (17%) and Baby Boomers (7%), in following influencers.

Five in ten of Malaysians relate most to micro-nano influencers with follower count under 500,000. The surveyed buyers find these influencers relatable because they occupy a niche in posting word-of-mouth recommendations to well-acquainted circles of interest. The degree to which Malaysians follow influencers in other tiers are spread: 25% like Mega influencers (over 1 million) and 22% prefer macro influencers (with 500,000 to less than a million followers). With the rise of influencers in Malaysia, 3 in 10 buyers want influencers to bond with them on a personal level so they can continue to stand out from their peers.

A third (30%) concede that they follow influencers to reaffirm their shopping choices before they purchase a product. 22% habitually follow influencers to stay on trend or to educate themselves, 21% find them relatable, 20% want to discover new things, and only 7% choose to follow them for their popularity. Across generations, Malaysians online want access to information that helps them shop smarter.

The most popular type of influencer content, according to a third (33%) of Malaysian buyers, are reviews, vlogs and unboxing videos. Unboxing has become a popular trend across e-commerce, particularly for Shopee livestream influencers, where they have the advantage of showcasing the full potential of products and demonstrating their effectiveness in action to their strong community of followers. It has become the most trusted way for them to share personal advice, get two-way feedback, and answer questions about the product directly with compelling proof.

Remaining buyers surveyed find inspiration in the following types of content: 20% watch DIY hacks, tips, and tricks, 19% feel rewarded by giveaways, special offers or contests, 15% discover new products or feature launch announcements, and 12% prefer interactive videos, livestreams and polls. Shopee brings communities together through content that entertains and for influencers to forge meaningful connections in real-time channels like Shopee Live.

“With many new sellers on the marketplace since the pandemic, buyers understandably are faced with more to choose from and more unknowns. Our influencers are a trusted community: Malaysian shoppers on our marketplace know the source, perceive them as fellow peers, and look to them to determine if they’re getting the best prices and whether they can trust user recommendations,” said Kenneth Soh, Head of Marketing Campaigns at Shopee Malaysia.

When Shopee asked 1,035 sellers what type of content they thought influencers should post on social media to help Malaysians shop smarter, 48% of sellers preferred influencers to post relevant and genuine reels and videos of their product. 24% wanted their products featured organically in engaging content, 15% wanted to see their products on influencer selfies, and 15% wanted influencers to give away their products in live interactions.

“We strongly believe that our community of influencers will help our sellers achieve sustainable growth because we see more Malaysians trusting them to inform their shopping decisions. Shopee Affiliate Programme, Shopee Influencer Marketing Programme, and Shopee Live are examples of how sellers can leverage trusted communities to cultivate more meaningful and loyal relationships online,” Soh added.

This study kicks off Shopee Malaysia’s November edition of e-commerce insights on how Malaysian influencers resonate with local audiences and how sellers can engage them to cultivate loyalty online. Further insights will be revealed on 2 November 2022. Shopee will level up these individuals by bringing the community closer through its Shopee Influencers Fest Countdown Party on 10 November 2022.

Survey Methodology*
The 2022 “The Future of E-Commerce with Malaysian Influencers” survey was conducted by Shopee Marketplace, between 28 September and 21 October 2022. Voluntary feedback was obtained from 2,459 Malaysian buyers and 1,035 Malaysian sellers on the platform.

Wagasa Yakiniku, Bukit Jalil, KL

If you're looking for something special for date night / family night out, Wagasa Yakiniku, located at The Link 2 in Bukit Jalil, offers an authentic Japanese yakiniku dining experience that is sure to please. The menu features premium A5 Japanese Wagyu from Kagoshima prefecture, Kurobuta pork as well as a variety of seafood.

Wagasa, literally translates as traditional umbrellas in Japanese; as you step foot into this restaurant, you will be greeted by the colorful sight of hanging umbrellas. You will be ushered into one of the private rooms so you can enjoy an intimate meal with your family or friends.

During our visit, we had the Japanese A5 Wagyu Shoulder Clod set (RM388 for 300g) which comes with 5 different cuts. The cuts were well-marbled, with differing textures when cooked. You can either self-grill or one of the friendly staff can assist you. The meat is grilled over charcoal embers, to your preferred doneness. The wagyu was really good, tender and flavorful. You can pair the meat with one of 3 condiments available - sesame oil and salt, chilli oil or garlic and coriander.

Refillable side dishes served with your meal

Other than wagyu, you can also get Kurobuta pork, highly revered for its outstanding texture, flavour and juiciness. We had the Kurobuta pork belly (RM48), with great, even marbling and fat layers. Very delicious indeed!

Think Pink Afternoon Tea @ WOOBAR, W Kuala Lumpur

In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, W Kuala Lumpur presents the Think Pink Afternoon Tea, with all things pink and pretty. Served from Tuesday to Sundays (from 3pm to 5pm) at WOOBAR, this swanky restaurant gets a pink makeover in keeping with the Pink October theme.

The afternoon tea comes with a selection of savouries and sweets, as well as freshly baked scones, mocktail of your choice and coffee/tea. First to arrive were the mocktails; Peachy Blinders (peach puree, Monin peach syrup, Everness soda) and How you like that (cranberry juice, coconut cream, Milklab coconut milk, whipping cream, etc), followed by the tea (they serve Jing tea here).

The savouries were outstanding; the Tuna Tartare pie tee with ikura and yuzu cream was my absolute favourite but the rest were equally amazing - Pulled lamb tartine with pomegranate, Spiced chicken slider, Balsamic roasted tomatoes on ricotta tart.

Even the scones come in pretty shades of pink; beetroot carrot scone and Vanilla cranberry scone, served with clotted cream and pink guava jam.

The sweets make up the first two tiers of the afternoon tea set, which includes Rose lychee quenelle sable, Raspberry velvet cheese, Hazelnut praline choux and their signature High heel with strawberry mascarpone. A wait staff comes around with a trolley, and you can choose 2 items from this (Hot lips bon bon, Rhubarb crumble cake, Pink peppercorn macaron, Crab cod mousse croisant, and Egg ravioli sandwich with chicken floss).

Breakfast Menu @ Harley's Burgers & Coffee Roasters, Cyberjaya

During the recent public holiday commemorating Prophet Muhammad's birthday, we took the kids to Cyberjaya for a stroll at Taman Tasik Cyberjaya, followed by a delicious breakfast at Harley's Burgers & Coffee Roasters. Cyberjaya is a short 25-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur.

Taman Tasik Cyberjaya is a well-kept public park, with plentiful of car parking. We spent about 45 minutes here, going for a morning walk plus enjoying the nature; there is a lotus pond in the centre of the park, you may even spot a monitor lizard or two. There are also bicycles for rent as well as a large playground for children.

Just 5 minutes drive away from the park is Harley's; we usually come here for their fabulous burgers but this time, we're here to check out their newly launched Breakfast Menu. Available from 8am - 11am daily, you can order their breakfast muffins (a la carte or make it a set for RM10.90) as well as their freshly baked pastries with a cup of coffee/tea.

Harley's Cyberjaya Breakfast Menu

I had the Chicken and Sambal Muffin with an add-on egg, and it was delicious! The sambal was sweet and spicy, just the way I like it. They also offer chicken and cheese muffins, if sambal is not your thing.

The pastries are available all day long, at RM3.50 each, and you can even enjoy 30% off from 3pm-6pm, and 50% off from 9pm- 12am. Yes, this Cyberjaya is now open til 12 midnight, so you know where to get to get your midnight munchies.

We love the chilled out vibe of this outlet, and ended up lounging here for quite a bit. Before we knew it, we were craving for some burgers too. Chloe made good use of her student ID and ordered a Student Meal for RM13.90, which comes with 1 burger (either cheeseburger, crispy chicken, or vegetarian) with your choice of side (fries, coleslaw, potato salad) OR drink (lemon tea or soft drinks). The Student Meal promo is available Monday to Friday, for a limited time only.

Meanwhile, Hubby ordered his all-time favourite, 2 x 2 burger (RM19.90) from the a la carte menu. Always hits the spot!

Sushi Mastro Nikkei, Kepong: Japanese-Peruvian Cuisine

Nikkei cuisine is the marriage of delicious Peruvian and Japanese flavours and one of the best places to experience this in Kuala Lumpur is at Sushi Mastro Nikkei. Located in Kepong in Fortune Centra, this Halal restaurant occupies the first floor above Baskin Robbins, with both indoor and balcony seating.

The menu comprises of soups, cold selections, sushi and sashimi, with an injection of Peruvian influences as well as Peruvian favourites such as ceviche, with a local twist (using local fish such as golden snapper) and much more. Service is friendly, with staff knowledgeable about the ingredients and ever ready to offer their recommendations on dishes to order here.

We started our meal with the Nikkei Salmon Mango (RM58). First mouthful, and I was in love. The sweet mango, luscious salmon sashimi slices and the salty ikura shoyu zuke worked magic together. No wonder this is the bestselling dish here at the restaurant. A must-try!

Next to arrive was the Mastro Ikejime Ceviche (RM42) using our local jenahak fish (golden snapper), prepared using the Japanese ikejime technique, to maintain the quality of the meat. The fish is marinated in leche de tigre, or tiger's milk, the Peruvian term for the citrus-based marinade that cures the seafood in a ceviche.

For drinks, try one of their creative Mocktails; we had the tea-based El Morado (RM13.80) as well as Pepino Asam Boi (RM13.80)

If you're a fan of sushi or sashimi, go for their signature Surtidas platter for an assortment of their best selections. We went for the Sashimi Surtidas (RM158) which comes with 8 kinds of fish (2 pieces each); featuring local fish such as siakap, jenahak, and Malabar snapper as well as Hokkaido scallop, salmon, hamachi, akami and maguro otoro. Ponzu sauce is poured over the local fishes. Everything was really fresh, a pure indulgence and joy to savour.

Possibly one of the most Instagrammed dish from this restaurant is the Seafood Shirashizushi (RM75), a delicious bowl of sushi rice topped with diced salmon, hamachi, hon maguro, amaebi, unagi, ikura, tobiko, baramundi, red snapper, and Malabar snapper. Once you're done snapping photos, turn over the contents of the bowl onto the plate provided, mix everything well, and dig in! The sushi rice is marinated with teriyaki and furikake, so it's an extra flavorful dish. It tastes just as good as it looks, amazing!

For dessert, we shared the Graham Cake (RM20), made from cream cheese, crackers and fruit cocktail. A nice, sweet end to our meal here.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here, totally worth the 45-minute drive to get here! The seafood was super fresh, and the flavours were well-balanced and spot on. Food presentation had the wow factor and is very Instagrammable too. As the restaurant is quite small, I highly recommend that you book a table before your visit.
