Xenri Japanese Restaurant, Old Klang Road, KL

Located in Old Klang Road, Xenri Fine Japanese Cuisine is a well-respected Japanese restaurant which has been delighting KL-ites for the past 16 years. Using the best quality ingredients paired with creativity and attention to detail, the fare at Xenri is the epitome of fine Japanese cuisine.

Guests can order from the a la carte menu, or opt for the seasonally-driven Kaiseki menu or omakase (every Tuesday and Friday only). They also offer affordable set lunches and set dinners.



Kaiseki is a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner, focusing on seasonal produce. It will usually include an appetizer, sashimi, a simmered dish, a grilled fish and a steamed course. A mini kaiseki at Xenri is priced from RM180 per person onwards, and be can designed to suit your preference and budget.

We started off our meal with the lovely Soba Sarada, with homemade organic apple dressing and Japanese tomatoes. Love the refreshing, appetizing dressing on this simple salad which certainly played its role in whetting our appetites. To go with our meal, we had the Yuzu soda as well as a carafe of chilled karakuchi.


Next is the course I'm most excited for - the sashimi moriawase - and boy, what an impressive, beautifully assembled platter it was! Featuring 10 different types of seafood, we thoroughly enjoyed the amazingly fresh, thick slices of salmon, salmon belly, kodai, hirame, hotate, akagai, amaebi, kanpachi, shima aji and tai.








This was followed by the Signature double boiled toro soup, which was warming and comforting. The clear soup comes with mushroom, nanohana and chunks of toro which added a rich flavour to the soup.



The Maguro Honniku Misoyaki features tuna cheeks from the tuna, in misoyaki sauce. Misoyaki is usually made by using sake, mirin, sugar and miso. The sweet-savoury flavours of the sauce complemented the rich, soft cheeks perfectly; we especially loved the beautiful, caramelised edges.



The Chirimen Jyako Kama Meshi, rice with mountain pepper and baby sardine, served in a Japanese iron pot was flavorful and delicious. This had quite a subtle flavour, so it went well with the more robust tuna cheek dish.



For a sweet end to our meal, we had the warabi mochi served with popped rice. I liked how this was presented with a paddy stalk, very pretty.

  1. I wish we had a nice Japanese place here. The franchise places and the local one we have are just so-so.
