Restoran Melur Thai, Cheras, KL

*February 2018: The restaurant has been renamed as Cik Melur.

I've been craving for tom yum for some time, so while considering our options for dinner, I remembered Restoran Melur Thai, which advertised tom yum as one of their specialties.

During our first visit, we arrived after 8pm and the place was absolutely heaving with customers. Seems like most of the diners prefer al fresco dining, so we found a table indoors easily (right next to the AC too yay!)

Their menu consists mainly of Malay dishes, such as chicken / beef / fish / prawn / squid cooked in various styles (masak merah, pedas, halia, kicap, padprik, goreng kunyit, masam manis), as well as fried rice, fried noodles, tom yum, soups and a few specialty Malay dishes (mee celup, nasi kukus ayam dara, sup ikan Pulau Pisang). All the dishes here are reasonably priced.

Hubby had one of their specialties, nasi kerabu (RM6.50) served with ayam goreng. The dish looked mouthwatering, featuring blue rice (usually tinged with blue pea flower), raw chopped long beans, spicy chilli sauce, keropok, kerisik sambal ikan, salted egg and fried chicken. They usually serve it here with daging bakar, but the waiter gave us the option of fried chicken, so we took it. We enjoyed this, something we would definitely come back for when we have the craving. Fantastic value for money too, as it comes with a chicken maryland (ie both drumstick and thigh).

I had the tom yum campur (RM7.50) which honestly doesn't look too great visually. But looks aside, it was sourish, spicy and appetizing, so it definitely hit the spot. The campur version comes with chicken, a few prawns, and squid.

For drinks, Hubby had the cendol (RM3) and my favorite pink drink from my childhood, sirap bandung (RM1.80). Complimentary plate of watermelon is served to all diners. Total bill for our first visit was RM21.70, very reasonable indeed.

So we came back another weekend to try more of their menu. This time, we ordered four dishes to share - a plate of nasi goreng kampung (RM6.50), mee goreng (RM6.50), kailan ikan masin (RM5.50) and sotong pedas (RM8). Everything was delicious and we had a great dinner. I especially love the sauce from the squid dish, both spicy and appetizing, so I doused the fried rice with the gravy and ate it together. YUM!

The noodles was also good, instead of the usual dry mee mamak, this was slightly saucy and slightly spicy, thanks to the chillies in the dish.

Melur Thai is definitely a great place to get our Malay food fix, at a very reasonable price and in a comfortable, clean environment. Can't wait to come back!

  2. I guess this is more fusion than Thai, Thai and Malay. I like both though. I love nasi kerabu, anytime more than the Thai pineapple fried rice. Sotong pedas? Oooo...I like anything pedas. Yummmm!!!!

  3. The sotong pedas looks like a version of seafood paprik I like to eat from one of the coffee shops in my area :)
