Recipe: Homemade old-fashioned lemonade

While the adults sipped on champagne with their roast beef dinner, the children too were delighted with their specially concocted drink - homemade lemonade. Popular in the USA and Canada, lemonade is an uncarbonated drink made from squeezed lemon juice, water, and sugar and garnished with slices of lemon.

This recipe for this old-fashioned lemonade is taken from another cookbook purchase at the BBW Sale - Much Depends on Dinner - am glad I am putting the books to good use instead of just collecting dust. The author suggests the use of organic lemons - presumably cause you are required to peel almost all the rind off and boil it together with the water. Non-organic lemons can contain quite a lot of pesticide on the outer layer.

This is a very refreshing drink, and is perfect for the recent hot weather spell.

Cool and refreshing

Homemade old-fashioned lemonade
Recipe adapted from Much Depends on Dinner - Amy Willcock
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 15-20 minutes
Makes 3 litres

Ingredients
10 organic lemons
2.5l water
250g - 300g caster sugar (or to taste)

1. Peel the lemons with a potato peeler, leaving behind as much of the white pith as possible.

2. Put the peels into a large pot and add the water. Bring to the boil.

3. Put the juice of the lemons and the sugar into a large heatproof container and stir to combine. Pour the boiling water on to the lemon juice and sugar and stir until it is dissolved.

4. Strain out the lemon peel. Cool and serve chilled with lots of ice.

  2. I love lemonade with lots and lots of ice. I prefer it with honey and when I am craving for sour, I add some apple cider vinegar - Wowzah!!

  3. No, thanks...not into sour stuff and I would add a lot of sugar to counter that and that's bad. Just plain water for me will do...and I know they say it's bad but I would prefer it with ice, the colder the better.

  13. I love lemonade and kids drink sometimes too especially during summer time. The store bought ones can be too sweet, so this is wonderful. I have my recipe somewhere but I think it's very similar. Some people told me to add honey instead but I like mine to be just sugar... haha.
