Last week, we had a long weekend due to the public holiday here in Malaysia. We just stayed in KL and did what we do best... EATING! Recently, my kids also enjoyed cari makan (trying out new restaurants) with me. Our first venture was to Dragon-i, which we enjoyed and then the following day, we tried out New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice, which is located in Sri Petaling KL.
As the name suggests, the restaurant is famous for Ipoh chicken rice as well as beansprouts. You won't need to drive to Ipoh (2 hrs from KL) to enjoy a plate of its famous delicacy. Founded by Mr. Yan Khoon Yin in 1997, it started in Jalan Gasing and now has six outlets around KL/Selangor. We found this outlet in Sri Petaling to be clean and comfortable (with a/c). They also have 2 Halal outlets in Bangsar and USJ.
Customers can choose from ordinary white chicken (RM36 for whole bird) or organic kampung chicken (RM68 for whole bird). Organic kampung chicken are bred in an environment where they can roam freely (free-range) and the skin is much more yellow as their staple diet is corn. We went for the organic kampung chicken, however we ordered 2 portions of breast meat (RM13) and one portion of drumstick (RM9) rather than half a chicken. This works out better for us since we get to eat the parts that we like/enjoy.
Our brunch spread ;)
The chicken skin was not as yellow as I expected it to be. Kampung chicken usually has a firmer texture but still smooth. The chicken here was served with coriander, grated young ginger and scallions in soy sauce-oil. Overall, I would say this was a tasty plate of chicken, though prices are a bit expensive since portion is not huge.
Organic kampung chicken drumstick
Organic kampung chicken breast (for 2 pax)
Ipoh is also famous for its short and fat beansprouts. You can either choose to have it blanched (RM2 per pax) or like us, opt for stir fried beansprouts with salted fish (RM8). The beansprouts were crunchy and nicely seasoned by the salted fish.
Chilli sauce to go with the chicken
Fluffy rice (RM1.60)
Baby D enjoyed these pork balls (RM4.40 for 4) which are made of fresh pork, minced dried cuttlefish and a "secret ingredient". It had a nice bouncy texture, and the cuttlefish was the more prevalent flavour. Baby D had two of these. The soup was quite nice too, tasted a bit like the ones they use in Ipoh hor fun.
Other than the above dishes, this restaurant also serves roasted chicken, roasted pork (siew yuk), honey BBQ pork (char siew), Hakka stewed pork, Ipoh hor fun, curry pigs skin, tofu, la la clams and even steamed tilapia!
Verdict: We found the food here to be pretty good, but quite pricey for "chicken rice" since we usually only pay RM4.80 per person for (roasted) chicken rice here in Cheras.
Opening times: 10.30am to 11.00pm.
Price: Total bill RM46 for 3 adults 2 children.
Location: New Restaurant Ipoh Chicken Rice, No. 1, Jalan 13/149L, Bandar Baru Sri Petaling, 57000 Kuala Lumpur.

Yummy... I love the idea of going to a chicken rice stall with organic chicken. If only they had it in Singapore. The best we have is kampong chicken.
ReplyDeleteNow that you mention it, I dont think I've ever eaten organic kampung chicken in a chicken rice stall as well. That (organic) would explain the high price tag.
DeleteThe chicken drumstick looks so delicious. The spring sprouts also look very good! The commercial made pork balls normally taste much better than homemade, if only I know how to make them crunchy, hahaha!
ReplyDeleteHaha! That's the "secret ingredient" for sure ;P
DeleteI think the chicken rice there is pretty good. I use to go there quite often when I was in high school @ CHS.
ReplyDeleteYeah we enjoyed the meal too, just felt it was expensive for chicken rice. :P
DeleteThis shop is pretty close to where I stay. Haven't been to this shop for quite a long while. Maybe it's time for revisit!
ReplyDeleteGO GO!
DeleteLooks good! Oooo...the chef so handsome! Doesn't look local...
ReplyDeleteHaha, I'm sure he's foreign too, not sure which country though.
Deletei should tar pau some chicken rice from here someday on my way home for a supper snack, since it closes relatively late :D
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they will have much choices left late at night? Cos a lot of items were not available since we were too early!
Deletethe beanstrout look good..
ReplyDeletefat and short .. just like the ipoh one
Yeah they get their beansprouts from Ipoh.
Deletelove it when the beansprouts are fat & crunchy!! awww man! I miss that hehe all the ones here (in melb) are skinnyyyyyyy :P can't wait to give this place a try! :D
ReplyDeleteComing back for hol soon?
DeleteThe chicken looks so succulent and juicy! And those short, fat bean sprouts look so interesting!
ReplyDeleteOh those beansprouts are special ones from Ipoh. Heard its the water there that makes them so fat!
DeleteI have to say, I was impressed with their presentation. Some coriander leaf and red chilli makes the dish very appealing.
ReplyDeleteOh this was one of our regular joints for lunch when I was working in KL last time. But we realized that the prices kept increasing until at one point, we were paying around RM20 per person for lunch! That was just crazy. And from then on we stopped going to this shop.. coz for RM20, there are plenty of other food that we could get.
ReplyDeleteYeah although tasty, I felt it was expensive for chicken rice.
DeleteI have soft spot for nga choy gai but will normally opt for normal chicken instead of kampung chicken because the prices is much more expensive :P
ReplyDeleteHaha! And more meat right?
DeleteI love Pak Cham Kai!! especially the ones with the super smooooooth skin! :D
ReplyDeleteSame with my mother. I don't like the skin unless it's deep fried. Haha!!
