Afternoon Tea @ OneSixFive, InterContinental Kuala Lumpur

During my birthday week, Hubby planned to bring me for an afternoon tea session. The invite from InterContinental KL to sample their new afternoon tea at the revamped OneSixFive lobby lounge couldn't have been timed any better.

The renovated OneSixFive lounge is gorgeous, it reflects the same modern yet elegant design of the new Lobby influenced by the geometric shape and sparkle of jewels. The lounge also underwent a concept change and now offers an all-new dining and lounging experience including afternoon tea, tapas and evening cocktails.

We picked a spot by the large floor-to-ceiling window with a view of the greenery, koi pond and man-made waterfall. For two hours we felt as though we were transported to an oasis of calm.

My favorite kind of afternoon tea is the three-tier kind - there is something extremely refined about enjoying tiny treats and sipping a cup of tea. The new afternoon tea at OneSixFive will showcase the savoir-faire of the hotel’s new Executive Chef Darrell O’Neill. Guests can choose from two inspiring sets: the Royal Afternoon Tea or for those who want that local flair, try the ‘Selera’ Malaysian Afternoon Tea. The afternoon tea set is priced at RM75 per person, including a pot of tea.

It was really hard to pick a favorite set, since both were extremely good. Everything on the tiers were well-thought out and nothing too samey, so each bite was pure pleasure. Usually the scones and sweets would be my favorites, but the savouries were just as good. All the buns and breads which was used for the savouries all tasted fresh and soft. The presentation is also exquisite.

The sweets off the Selera Afternoon Set was great. I liked the durian eclair, not too overpowering so anyone can still enjoy this. The red bean and chocolate opera cake had the unique "Asian" twist. But my favorite sweet from this set has to be the mango panna cotta with sago.. really delectable.

Hubby had the lemon verbena which has a refreshing lemon aroma, while I had the Shanghai Rose which was fragrant from the rose and lychee


The Royal Afternoon Tea was very good too. I like the scones in both sets, and they come served with a deliciously rich Australian clotted cream. I enjoyed the savouries, particularly the Peking duck roll, wagyu beef tartare with wasabi and brioche, as well as the crab remoulade roll. You won't the regular (boring) finger sandwiches here, but instead these beautiful creations takes its place.

There were no pastries on this set that I didn't like. The green tea creme brulee was silky smooth, caramel eclair oozing with pleasure, and this also marks my first time eating a tonka bean macaron. You can also read more about their macarons here.

We also got to try their special hot chocolate which is interactive and fun at the same time. You can choose to have milk, dark or white chocolate. A hot glass of milk is served, and you dip the chocolate inside and remove it when it has reaches the intensity that you like.



Chef Darrell’s decadent new afternoon teatime pastries can also be ordered in full sized portions from the Lounge Menu. Chef Darrell unveils his palatable snack menu comprising of his creative signature highlights such as mini lobster and mango taco, mini Wagyu sliders with Gruyère Cheese and the Lobster Club. Hubby and I would probably come back to try their tapas offerings soon.

Chef Darrell also let us try another one of his tonka bean creation, the luscious tonka bean panna cotta, served with fresh berries and mango.

Verdict: Definitely one of the most enjoyable afternoon teas in KL. Plus it has a lovely ambiance. 

Afternoon tea is served between 2.00pm to 5.00pm daily. It is priced at RM75 per person (per set).

    1. Usually I don't like the Malaysian version of afternoon tea in many hotels cos they just throw in the traditional kuih but I like how innovative they are here.
