2012 Mooncakes @ Toh Yuen, Hilton Petaling Jaya

Dear readers, how much do you love mooncakes? This year so far, I have tasted 34 mooncake flavours ;)

The most recent ones that we sampled were from Toh Yuen Chinese Restaurant in Hilton Petaling Jaya. There are a total of 6 traditionally baked mooncakes (RM22 each) and 6 mini snow skin mooncakes (RM13 each) to choose from here. I managed to try all the snow skin ones and 4 of the baked ones. The mooncakes are available from 1 August till 30 September 2012

The handcrafted mooncakes are elegantly packaged in a box with oriental motifs, that comes in three vibrant colours - red and black, turquoise and green. Mooncake boxes these days are great - you can often use them afterwards for storing your stationery or jewellery.

The traditional baked mooncake flavours on offer here are white lotus paste with single yolk, green tea paste with single yolk, red bean paste with sunflower seeds, five nuts, lotus paste with double yolk and pandan paste with single yolk. The salted egg yolks here are very nice and moist. The paste filling were all smooth. The five nuts received high praise from my mum and cousin (a guest at our home that evening), both big lovers of this mooncake stating that it wasn't too sweet and the nut selection was good.

Baby D eager to get his hands on the mooncake!

After our food review at Toh Yuen (will blog about this soon), we were also treated to the whole selection of mini snow skin mooncakes. The snow skin mooncake flavours available are lotus paste with sunflower seeds, red bean and banana paste, pumpkin and pandan paste, yam and strawberry paste, green tea paste with cheesecake and durian paste. What a beautiful, colorful array of mooncakes! The snow skin mooncakes here have thicker skin, hence it's wonderfully chewy. My favorite flavour is the green tea paste with cheesecake, the slightly bitter green tea went well with the sweet, smooth cheesecake.

  4. Lucky you!!! I have not been buying these nice ones for years now - only the cheap, not-so-nice local ones to preserve the tradition. Too expensive, can't afford!

RM22 each!!! *faints* I don't like the snow skin ones - only the traditional pastry skin for me...and I don't mind it a bit thick as I like the pastry. Too thin, can't feel, can't taste it at all - might as well just eat the filling on its own.

  6. Green tea paste with cheesecake sounds interesting! I much prefer these kind of mooncakes with new types of flavours compared to the traditional lotus paste baked type...

  7. quite reasonably priced mooncakes! i usually skip buying them in boxes though, since i find the boxes a bit too costly for comfort :D i'm not sure i'll check out PJ Hilton's batch, since i'm trying to limit myself to three mooncake outings maximum this year, but hopefully i'll get to KL Hilton before time is up :D

  9. did you try the durian flavor? How was it if compare to the Toh Lee's version?

    Replies
    1. Yes I did.

Toh Lee's one has stronger durian flavour and the oats give it some texture.
Toh Yuen's one is a bit milder, but those that dont really like durian will eat this too.
