Palate Palette Restaurant & Bar, Kuala Lumpur

After my hospital appointments at Prince Court Medical Centre, we usually head to Max for their set lunch. Breaking from routine, we decided to try somewhere different for a change. Don't get me wrong, we love the set lunches at Max as they are great value for money and great tasting but at times, change is good.

So, the next question was, where else in the city can we get value for money set lunches?

Palate Palette, it was.

One would describe the decor here as eclectic and definitely artsy. Vibrant colours adorn the walls and quirky chairs and tables fill the room.

Their Variety Set Munch is an absolute steal at RM20++, whereby you get a starter, main course and drink. Set lunches are available from 12-3pm, from Tuesdays to Fridays only.

For drinks, Hubby had the Iced Lemon Tea, The Unc had the house favorite, Assam Boi and I had the Iced Mint Leaf Tea. Very refreshing!

For starters, I had the Mushroom Cappucino, a lightly creamed homemade stock with substantial oyster and Portobello mushroom bits. I loved it!

Warm, fluffy bread rolls were served with our starters. Unlike Max, you don't get bread refills here.

Hubby had the Chicken Lollipops, 3 pieces of chicken drummets served with a roasted chilli mayo dip. Nice crispy skin!

I was surprised when The Unc ordered the Shrimp & Avocado Salad, since he is a meat lover. The healthy salad option turned out to be delicious; the avocado puree was creamy and the prawns were succulent.

Hubby definitely made the best choice when it came to the mains. He had the "Fish and Chips" (note the deliberate use of inverted commas in their menu), which is unique and definitely not the regular fish & chips one might encounter from a chippy. Coated in light tempura batter, the dory fish was fresh and fleshy. Instead of greasy chips, the fish was served with a skewer of sweet potatoes and yam crisps.

I had the Oxtail Shepherd's Pie - the filling of braised oxtails with vegetables, topped with gravy was very flavoursome, but I found the garlic mash a little too wet for my liking.

The Unc had the Lamb & Onions, whereby the lamb has been marinated in Honey Worchestershire sauce and served on a bed of caramelised onions with a mint yoghurt sour cream. He felt that the combination of flavours were a little odd and that this dish was missing something - I've had something similar before but the lamb & onions were placed in a wrap and it was much better that way.

If you still have room, just add another RM7 for dessert . Since there were only 2 desserts to choose from, we ordered them both to try.

The Ginger Crème Brulee had the prerequisite rich custard base topped with a layer of caramel. The version here is infused with locally-grown ginger and served with an almond biscotti. Indulgent!

Again, when the Toasted Carrot Cake arrived, we were pleasantly surprised. Not the conventional carrot cake one would expect. The carrot cake was served with cream cheese frosting and a strawberry-basil-mint coulis and was a sweet ending to our meal.

Verdict: For the price we paid, food was good. The quirky decor and relaxed setting was a refreshing change for us. If only parking was a little easier here.
